When mould spores are given the right temperature, moisture or humidity level they begin to grow. If you can smell mould, you can be sure your facility has fallen victim. Some of your residents and staff may be highly allergic to mould, so it’s important to locate it to reduce contamination levels. But where is a good place to start?

Mould Is Found in Places That You Can’t Reach – If there is dust on a surface, it probably contains mould spores. A thorough cleaning, especially in higher areas that are hard to reach will reduce the possibility of mould growth.

Mould Is Found in Places That You Can’t See – Examples would include dark closets, behind refrigerators in kitchen. Just because you can’t see it, doesn’t mean it’s not a great incubator for mould.

Mould Is Found Wherever It Is Wet- Ceilings and tiles in ensuites and bathrooms, also check shower curtains. Another place to look is behind washing machines in your laundry. Make sure each machine’s connection is tight and not dripping.

Mould Is Found Where There Is Poor Air Circulation – Look behind furniture jammed up against walls (resident lounge areas for example) or in utility closets that overflow with boxes and have no ventilation.

The conclusion: Mould hides in plain sight. You need only look for it. And when you find it, clean it up immediately to create a cleaner and healthier indoor environment. Out of sight does not translate to out of mind.
